Congratulations on securing an interview!
After more than 30 years in recruiting, I’ve seen firsthand that strong interview performance is about much more than simply having the right technical skills. Preparation, communication, professionalism and follow-up all play an important role in making a great impression.
I’ve put together some of my favourite quick interview tips and videos below to help you feel prepared, confident and ready to put your best foot forward.
Before the Interview
First impressions matter. Your goal is to look professional and appropriate without having your outfit distract from the conversation.
- Research the organization, the role and the person you’ll be meeting with.
- Review the job description carefully and know how your experience connects to the key requirements.
- Review the exact version of your resume that was submitted to the employer.
- Prepare 3–4 specific examples of accomplishments, challenges you solved, process improvements or leadership situations.
- For Teams or Zoom interviews, test your camera, microphone and internet connection in advance.
- Choose a quiet, well-lit location with a clean, professional background.
- Dress professionally, even for a virtual interview.
- Avoid gum, eating, checking your phone or other distractions.
- Keep a copy of your resume and the job description beside you for reference.
During the Interview
Your technical background may get you the interview, but communication, listening, confidence and connection often influence who ultimately gets the offer.
Why Skills Alone Don’t Get You the Job
- Listen carefully and answer the question that was actually asked.
- Use specific examples rather than general statements.
- Keep your answers focused and concise.
- Show enthusiasm for the role and the organization.
- Let your personality come through while staying professional.
- Make eye contact with the camera during a virtual interview.
- Be ready to explain why this role makes sense for you at this point in your career.
Most interviewers will ask if you have any questions. This is your opportunity to show curiosity, judgment and genuine interest in the role.
- What would success look like in this role after the first six months?
- What are the biggest priorities for the person stepping into this position?
- How would you describe the team and leadership style?
- Is there anything about my background you’d like me to clarify before we wrap up?
After the Interview
The interview may be over, but your opportunity to make a strong impression isn’t. A thoughtful follow-up can reinforce your interest and help you stand out.
- Send a brief thank-you email within 24 hours.
- Thank the interviewer for their time and mention something specific you enjoyed discussing.
- Reconfirm your interest in the opportunity.
- Keep the message warm, professional and concise.
- If you are working with Burke Recruiting, let your recruiter know how the interview went and whether your interest level has changed.
