Accounting Manager / Hands-on Controller

Burke Recruiting is partnering with a growing, purpose-driven consulting firm to find an experienced Accounting Manager / Hands-on Controller.
Our client specializes in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability and offers a collaborative, fully remote working environment with excellent flexibility and work-life balance.
This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys taking ownership of the entire finance function within a smaller organization. You’ll be equally comfortable managing day-to-day accounting activities and providing meaningful financial insight to senior leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage full-cycle accounting, including AP, AR, payroll, invoicing and reconciliations.
- Oversee month-end close and prepare accurate financial statements and management reports.
- Develop and maintain budgets, forecasts and cash-flow projections.
- Monitor project costs, profitability, margins and financial performance.
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support management decisions.
- Maintain effective internal controls and accurate accounting records.
- Identify opportunities to streamline processes, improve reporting and introduce automation.
- Coordinate year-end reporting and liaise with external accountants.
- Support additional operational and financial initiatives as the company grows.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Strong full-cycle accounting background with experience working independently.
- Experience preparing financial statements, budgets and forecasts.
- Project accounting or job-costing experience is highly desirable.
- Experience in consulting, engineering, professional services or another project-based industry is an asset.
- Strong QuickBooks Online and Excel skills.
- CPA designation is an asset but not required.
- Excellent analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication skills and the confidence to recommend improvements.
- Comfortable working independently while remaining hands-on with daily accounting responsibilities.

You are proactive, resourceful and confident in your accounting abilities. You don’t need a large team beneath you to be successful, and you’re just as comfortable completing reconciliations as you are discussing financial performance with senior management.
Salary: $95,000–$115,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
